The Columbia Archives is the primary resource on the history of the planning and development of Columbia and the life and career of its visionary founder, James Rouse. It is a service of the Columbia Association. June 1967
June 21 becomes Columbia’s “birthdate” with the dedication of Wilde Lake marking the beginning of Columbia.

June 1972
First Ball in the Mall on June 17 helps mark Columbia’s 5th birthday. The BYOB event for $8 featured two bands, Appaloosa and Goodtimer’s.

June 1974
Groundbreaking ceremony for Oakland Mills Interfaith Center takes place on June 9.

June 1977
Many events mark Columbia’s 10th birthday including an exhibit on new communities at the Columbia Mall produced by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.

June 1981
Alfred Smith Jr., first president of Howard Community College, retires after 12 years.

June 1989
The Festival of the Arts presents its inaugural season showcasing local, regional and national performing and visual artists in a three-day event.
